CIBJO Commissions Release Special Pearl Report

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

CIBJO - World Jewelry ConfederationCIBJO, an international confederation of national jewelry trade organizations, has released a new guidance report for the cultured pearl industry.

The update primarily addresses new classification of “saltwater” cultured pearls and disclosure requirements on the “treatment” processes used in cultivating “colored” cultured pearls.  The report reinforces Mastoloni’s position of “full” disclosure in our industry which better supports consumers’ needs for complete transparency in the world cultured pearl industry.

About CIBJO:

CIBJO’s purpose is to encourage harmonization, promote international cooperation in the jewelry industry, and to consider issues which concern the trade worldwide. Foremost among these is to protect consumer confidence in the industry.

CIBJO pursues these objectives through informed deliberation, decisions reached in accordance with its statutes, and proactive communications with member national organizations and the trade.

The Pearl Commission of CIBJO released its special report ahead of the 2010 CIBJO Congress on February 19 in Munich, Germany. In the report, the commission reviewed a number of amendments to the Pearl Blue Book.

Among the amendments that had been ratified at the 2009 Congress in Istanbul was a requirement to disclose a treatment achieved during the “Akoya” cultured pearl’s growth as “color induced cultured pearls.” The treatment consists of injecting metal fluids into the pearl’s sac to induce varying colors, depending on the metal used.

The reports also mentions a change to Clause 4.2.8 in the Blue Book, which states that when making reference to a saltwater cultured pearl the words “cultured pearl” needs to be preceded by the word “saltwater.”

Report on US Cultured Pearl Market Released

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

graph-upUS Cultured Pearls Market to Exceed $1.6 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

Great article on how exchange rates of USD vs other currencies (primarily JPY) are creating wonderful buying opportunities overseas for low - medium quality Japanese and freshwater raw materials.  However, better quality Japanese akoya pearls (like AA, AA1 and A+) remain scarce and in high demand.

GIA announces the release of a US report on Natural and Cultured Pearls markets. The US market for cultured pearls is projected to exceed $1.6 billion by the year 2015. The weakening dollar is creating opportunities for other countries to buy top-quality pearls in each category. The US market is witnessing an increase in the number of international buyers, leading to a scarcity of superior-quality pearls. International clients are taking full advantage of the lowered exchange rates due to the fall in the US currency.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) February 16, 2010 — Natural pearls are very rare as well as expensive, which makes cultured pearls the only alternative for majority of the consumers desiring to own real pearls. High quality natural and cultured pearls appear identical to naked eyes, and often only those who are experts in pearls or are trained can identify the difference using an X-ray instrument. The core of cultured pearls is larger as compared to natural pearls. While, white, pink and cream have always been popular pearl colors, black, gold and silver are as well turning popular these days. Among the pearl producers, Australia, Myanmar and Indonesia hold recognition as key producers of large and white pearls, whereas the Japanese pearls are renowned for their lustrous appearance.

The demand for natural and cultured pearls is expected to grow at a flat rate in the US, as stated by the new market research report on natural and cultured pearls market. Low consumer awareness about the different types and qualities of available pearls negatively impacts the business of pearl producers. Various global organizations including Cultured Pearl Association, Australia’s Licensed Pearl Producers, World Pearl organization, and Japan Pearl Promotion Society fund are undertaking initiatives to inform consumers about the wide variety of pearls available and the appeal of pearl jewelry.

Historically, pearls were obtained from the body of sea oysters. Due to the shortage in supply of pearl oysters, pearls are now being increasingly obtained through pearl farming techniques. In order to stabilize the increase in pearl prices, it has become essential for pearl producers to supply pearls in line with the rising domestic and international demand. Artificial harvesting is a common practice among pearl producers.

Key players profiled in the report include American Bio-Gem, Inc., and American Pearl Company.

The report titled “Natural and Cultured Pearls: A US Market Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., provides a review of market, key producers, concerns and challenges, trade, and recent industry activity. The study analyzes market data and analytics in terms of value sales in the US.

Phu Quoc – Haven of pearls

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

phquoc-islandDid you know that pearls are also cultivated in Vietnam?  Here is a nice article about the pearl cultivation industry in Phú Quốc.  Phú Quốc (known as Koh Tral by Cambodians) is the largest island of Vietnam. The island is part of Kiên Giang province.

VietNamNet Bridge – Phu Quoc island in the southern province of Kien Giang is not only famous for such authentic products as fish sauce and pepper, but also widely-known as the “number 1 pearl farm” in the country.

Pearl production on the island may take one and a half years in comparison with up to two years in other regions like Quang Ninh or Nha Trang”, revealed Ho Phi Thuy, director of the Ngoc Hien Pearl Enterprise.

Thuy, with his rich experiences in pearl cultivation, has been dubbed by pearl traders “the billionaire of Phu Quoc pearl island”. It is not easy to produce a fine pearl, Thuy said, adding that he has to patiently select a pair of breeding oysters, take care of them, and choose the best time for transplantation before producing just one pearl.

According to him, oysters aren’t just about pearls: they produce nutritious food, materials for making lacquer paintings, and can be used for fine arts and handicraft items. Besides being jewellery, pearls can be used as medicine, he added, citing the belief that pearls grown well in salt water can protect wearers from the harmful effects of the wind and give them brighter and smoother skin.

Pearls can be in different colours but the most precious and rarest are the blue ones. However, in general, it is their glossiness and roundness that determines their value.

At present, almost all of his pearls are exported to Japan where people believe wearing pearls will bring them fortune. In 2009, Thuy earned about 4.5 billion VND (250,000 USD) from exports to this market.

In addition to exports, Thuy opened a showroom for the benefit of tourists on the island, where fake pearls and pearls of no clear origin are sold widely.

Thuy said he wants to expand his business at home, but logistical difficulties have forced him to invest in a pearl farm in Cambodia , where the climate is nearly the same as in Phu Quoc.

“I have an ambition to produce the most beautiful pearl in the world. For me, now, pearl production is not a mere business but a great passion in my life,” said Thuy.

Creative Ways to Give Pearls for Valentine’s Day

Friday, January 15th, 2010

valentine-pearls-mastoloniValentine’s Day is only a month away. Time to start planning those romantic gifts for your wife, girlfriend or that special woman in your life. The gift of pearls is the ideal choice for so many. Pearls have for centuries represented love and sentiment. Your gift of pearls to the special woman in your life will show just how much you care.

One of the fun things about Valentine’s Day is not simply giving pearls to that special woman in your life - but giving them to her in a creative and very thoughtful way. Let’s share with you some of our favorite creative ways to give pearls for Valentine’s Day. We’re sure these will spark romantic ideas of your own to treat that wonderful woman in your life like the very treasured pearl that she is!

Hiding fine pearl jewelry in a place she’ll find them is a sweet surprise. Imagine her waking up in the morning to put on her bathrobe to reach a hand in the pocket and feeling a beautiful strand of fine pearls. Or to pick up her favorite coffee mug and see a jeweler’s pouch sitting in it, with a pearl bracelet inside. What a fun surprise for Valentine’s Day - and a great way to start the day in a romantic way! The key to doing this successfully is knowing your wife or girlfriend’s routine and daily habits. If your wife or girlfriend has a very regular morning routine - this can be an ideal choice for you.

Putting the pearls inside a box that is in another box is also a fun choice. So the box you give your wife or girlfriend is much larger than the actual pearl jewelry box. The most fun to have with this is to have many boxes of different sizes. Try gift wrapping them with vibrant gift wrapping paper in Valentine’s Day colors especially of red, pink and white with lots of hearts. The fun surprise of getting to that final box will be very exciting.

Giving your wife or girlfriend a heart-shaped box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day is likely a classic gift choice. Why not replace some of the chocolates with the gift box holding the beautiful pearl jewelry? She’ll have her breath simply taken away when she realizes the treasure hiding inside. This is an ideal choice especially for the chocolate lover but is a very romantic choice for many wives or girlfriends.

A treasure map with puzzles and clues is a fun and romantic choice ideal for many wives and girlfriends. Select this choice if your wife or girlfriend enjoys her morning crossword puzzle or Sudoku - or if she especially enjoys mysteries or logical puzzles. Your treasure map can be very simple - print one out from an Internet directions map site. Hide the pearls in a location where they will be cool and dry.
